Design & manufacture

Parts that work, drawings suppliers can build from, and honest advice on whether to print it.

I started as an apprentice in 1995 — machining, fabrication, CNC — and moved into the design office, so I design for the shop floor that has to make it. I take on CAD and drawing work when you don't have the capacity, review designs for manufacturability, and give independent advice on additive manufacturing, with no printer or filament to sell you.

What I can do for you

  • CAD & drawing capacity

SOLIDWORKS models, assemblies, sheet metal and weldments, with drawings to BS 8888 and accurate BOMs, when you need design capacity without a permanent hire.

  • Design-for-manufacture review

An independent look at a design before it’s committed to tooling or production: risk, tolerances, cost drivers and simpler ways to make it.

  • Is 3D printing right for this part?

Part suitability, process and material choice, and whether additive actually beats machining or moulding on cost, strength and lead time.

  • Design for additive manufacture

Redesigning parts for the process: orientation, supports, wall thickness and part consolidation, decided early in CAD where it’s cheap.

  • Bringing additive in-house

An equipment brief without vendor spin, a repeatable CAD-to-part workflow, and staff trained to run it as routine.

  • Prototype to production

Taking an idea to a discussable design, then to a drawing pack that suppliers can quote and build from.

ABT PRODUCTS · DESIGN OFFICE
CAD→LASERdesign through to production

Design that went straight to manufacture

As design engineer I handled client liaison, SOLIDWORKS assemblies, drawings, BOMs and costings, and wrote laser programs in RADAN. The work went to the shop floor, not into a folder.

CSWEplus CSWP-A ×4

CAD held to an examined standard

Certified SOLIDWORKS Expert, plus CSWP-Advanced in drawing tools, sheet metal, weldments and surfacing. Models and drawings that survive supplier scrutiny and design review.

APPRENTICE-TRAINED

Design that respects manufacture

A multi-skilled apprenticeship, then machine shop, fabrication, CNC programming and aerospace project work. My manufacturability advice comes from standing at the machine.

MY OWN PRODUCT · STAMPLAB
STAMPLABdesigned for 3D printing

A product range designed for the printer

StampLab is my own line of single-purpose embossing tools, including StampLab Fold and Rollers, designed from the start to be 3D printed. Design for additive manufacture, taken all the way to product.

A parametric part you can design and slice

I built a browser tool that designs a real bracket, estimates its load, mass and carbon, and slices it into toolpaths, as a teaching aid for design and additive manufacturing.

How we'd work together

  1. 01

    Free first call

30 minutes on the part, product or decision. I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.

  2. 02

    Design or additive review

A fixed-scope review of a design, drawing pack or 3D-printing decision, with a written report and clear recommendations.

  3. 03

    Design project

CAD models, drawings or a prototype route for a defined part or assembly, at a fixed price agreed up front.

  4. 04

    Ongoing design support

Regular CAD and design capacity alongside your team, at a day rate.

Defined work gets a fixed quote before anything starts; ongoing support is by day rate. More on how I work.
